My Honest Review of Nu Skin Business Opportunity
NuSkin Reviews – About The Company
NuSkin was founded in 1984 by Blake Roney, Sandie Tillotson and Steve Lund. The company now operates in over 53 countries around the world and is one of the top 10 biggest network marketing companies in the world with an annual turnover of over $1 Billion.
The company now has over 1 Million independent distributors which they pay out around 43% of the revenue to and they work under the philosophy of “All of the good and none of the bad“. I don’t think 95% of the population really understand that most of the products in the supermarket and high street are actually really bad for our skin and bodies. Though the word is getting out with companies like this.
Nu Skin has over 200 products in personal care, nutrition supplements, cosmetics, skin care, and anti-aging. All their products go through a 6S quality process as follows.
- Selection – They have a team of people selecting only the best botanicals with the best health benefits. Only botanicals that pass extensive Pharmanex® tests for authenticity, usefulness and safety are considered.
- Sourcing – The company will then choose the best supplier they can get for that particular ingredient. Pharmanex® chooses a supplier based on the quality and concentration level of the active ingredient.
- Structure – Pharmanex® conducts structural analyses of the natural compounds present in the selected botanical. These analyses isolate and purify specific chemical structures in standardized extracts, a critical step in ensuring a safe and effective botanical.
- Standardization – Some products can vary due to conditions including soil, weather, season, etc. All the products must then go through a standardization process to stabilize everything and to make them identical.
- Safety – Pharmaceutical-grade tests for the presence of microbes, toxins, and heavy metals are carried out for all products. Each product needs to be tested and to make sure it meets all of today’s strict requirements.
- Substantiation – All product claims need to be tested as companies can get in trouble by making claims that have not been proven. The attention to detail, strict scientific testing, and commitment to quality ensures that every Pharmanex® product is absolutely safe and effective.
In 1992 five states had accused the company of deceptive advertising and overstating the income earned by it’s independent consultants. In 1994 the NuSkin had to pay $1 million and signed an agreement prohibiting it from making deceptive or unsubstantiated claims about its products. In 1997, the company had to pay an additional $1.5 million to settle ongoing allegations of unsubstantiated promotional claims.
The Good Points – Nu Skin Distributor
As NuSkin is one of the top 100 network marketing powerhouses in the world the company must clearly be doing something right. You do not get to $1 Billion in sales by luck. The product is clearly high quality with lots of testimonies which is also good. I believe that many people are making good money and have built good businesses but the company falls down on one factor. The market timing factor.
The Bad Points
When starting any business market timing is a critical factor. You do not want to join a start up as it is too risky but you also do not want to join the biggest companies in the world as the market is very saturated and you miss the opportunity wave instead of being carried on it. We feel this company is too well established to offer the best opportunity for people right now.
When you begin to research Nu Skin Enterprises, you start to run into to a cluster or keywords that all don’t sound much like NuSkin or Newskin in any way.
For instance, when I started this NuSkin review, I found words like ageLoc vitality, something called galvanic (what the heck is that?), Pharmanex and about a million other weird words. I easily found the NuSkin Compensation Plan but other information was jumbled and scarce.
I knew when I started that I was going to have to do some digging to figure out if I’d have to do a separate Pharmanex review or find out if Pharmanex was a product.
By looking at some the existing NuSkin Reviews, I saw that there is a huge concern about whether or not NuSkin USA and the International Enterprise is a scam due to FDA inquiries in the past.
So, if you are deciding whether or not NuSkin is on of the right MLM companies for you to join, I invite you to check out the newest Nu Skin Enterprises Compensation Plan to decide if you think it’s worthy of trying to make money with.
If you are here reading this Nu Skin Review chances are your are either looking to find out more information about the Nu Skin Company because you are thinking of joining them, or you are already a Nu Skin distributor and maybe struggling to keep your dream of being a network marketing success alive.
First and foremost let me tell you, this is an independent review and I am neither a NuSkin distributor or the user of Nu Skin products. I am sharing that with you because I intend to be as objective as I possibly can be and to provide you with an unbiased view of the company and whether or not it offers or provides an opportunity for you to create a sound long term financially rewarding business. I also want to add here I am not about to “pitch” you on any other Network Marketing company, in fact, I am not even going to tell you what company I am with.
The NuSkin Compensation Plan 2015
When you decide to join the NuSkin Business Opportunity, you are able to buy NuSkin and Pharmanex products at wholesale prices (not unusual for most MLM’s).
The very first step of the NuSkin comp Plan emphasized signing up new customers and enrolling them in the Auto Ship program to get additional discounts and/or to get them to join under you in the NuSkin MLM opportunity.
The way that they suggest you start to sell NuSkin Products is by “sharing your story” (Sound familiar to my other MLM reviews? It should)
Just like my friend who has her Jeunesse Opportunity plastered all over her Facebook, or my other gal pal who is pushing the Mary Kay Consultant Opportunity, NuSkin wants you to tell as many people as possible about the NuSkin Biz op that you can.
You can Not get paid by NuSkin until you meet all the “active requirements”. Let’s find out what those are:
To be an Active NuSkin Representative you have to:
- Have $250 in Personal Group Sales Volume
- FIVE customer Sales per month.
You DO not have to purchase product to be considered active if you qualify for the $250 with your group sales. (this requires to have a downline so it’s not going to happen right away…unless you’re a traffic generating genius and you’ve already gone through the Job Killing Program)
The next step in making money with NuSkin is …….yup…you guessed it…finding more customers.
The first big lead is to qualify as an Executive Leader which opens to the door to more compensation incentives and bonuses.
To qualify as an Executive:
Month 1 – $250 in Personal Sales and Group sales from your Level 1 and $1000 in Group Sales Volume
Month 2 -$250 in the Personal Sales and Group Sales (l1) and $1500 in Group Sales Volume
Month 3 – $250 (same as above) and $2000 in group sales volume
Then there are some qualification requirements of what counts towards your Group Sales Volume and a chart is provided. It’s confusing if you’re not familiar with how MLM company compensation programs work.
On top of the Executive Leader Rank, you can earn the bonuses as well.
You can earn anywhere from 9 to 15% of the Group Sales volume depending on the volume you bring in. Generally as the Group Sales Volume increases, the % you earn off that amount increases as well.
I could go on and on about the NuSkin Compensation plan and bore you to death about how to get the progression Bonus pool and what the wealth maximizer is, but it starts to become adamantly clear that the NuSkin compensation plan is anything but easy to understand and the main focus is on recruiting individuals.
It’s no wonder they’ve been investigated.
It seems that this is by far one of the more confusing and almost intentionally clutter compensation plans in multi level marketing that I have seen in all of the MLM reviews I have done so far.
What’s scary is that it’s only three pages long but I just lose interest.
You have to accumulate shares and all sorts of crazy crap that I don’t feel like reading about.
My brain cells are pretty quick, but doublers and maximizers boggle it and I just need to move on from this crazy comp plan.
Nu Skin Review
The Nu Skin company was founded in 1984 by Blake Roney, Steve Lund, and Sandie Tillotson and since the launch has become one of the bigger players in the Network Marketing arena. The company began by trading in the USA and until early 1990 that is where it concentrated all of its marketing efforts. In 1990 Nu Skin began its International expansion program when they opened their operation in Canada. in 1996 the company became a publicly listed company and has continued its international expansion and now operates in 52 countries in North America, Europe, and Asia and currently has around 825,000 distributors worldwide. Nu Skin had an annual turnover in 2010 of approx $1.5 billion US dollars.
Nu Skin Products Price List
Nu Skin has approx 200 products including hair and skin care along with a range of Nutritional and anti-aging products.
The NuSkin Product range basically covers all aspects of personal care, including a large range of skin care, anti-aging and spa products.
The Pharmanex product range coves Nutritional, weight management and vital aspects of personal care
The ageLOC Nu Skin Lumia is a rechargeable, waterproof, cordless electric cleansing device (that you can bring into the shower with you). It comes with two different silicon heads that rotate at different frequencies and directions so your skin gets cleansed and exfoliated.
The cleansing session lasts two minutes and the device would pause automatically every 30 seconds to prompt you to move on to another part of your face. If you are tugging at your skin, scrubbing too hard or using too much force and pressure, the cleaning device would also pause automatically. These silicon heads are intended to be less abrasive than bristles and are meant to get into your pores to allow for a deep clean. You can detach the silicone head to wash it and it lasts for about three months.
I have many cleansers that I alternate depending on how my skin is feeling for the day. However, with this cleansing tool, it is recommended for you to use the ageLOC LumiSpa Activating Cleansers that are specifically formulated with the ageLOC Lumia device. They are designed to work synergistically with the counter-rotating motion of the heads to optimize the distribution of anti-aging ingredients onto the skin while cleansing and exfoliating. That said, I did really like the cleanser I tried – the ageLOC LumiSpa Activating Cleanser (sensitive) that contains oat extract because it left my skin clean but not squeaky clean to the point where I felt like my natural oils were stripped off my face.
Even though the directions suggest using the tool twice a day (once in the morning and once at night), I wouldn’t suggest doing that especially if your skin is on the sensitive side because you don’t want to risk over-exfoliating your skin.
The Nu Skin Pay Plan
Earning Money with Nu Skin will depend completely on the work you do and how much you help others. The compensation plan the company have in place basically pays out in four different ways.
- Fast start Payments
- Retail Margins
- Volume Commissions
Claims that Nu Skin is a scam!
Because of some product claims back in 1994 which was followed by an FTC (Federal Trade Commission) investigation Nu Skin paid $1 million and signed a consent decree preventing them from making deceptive or unsubstantiated claims about its products. Like some other companies in the Network Marketing arena Nu Skin have had more than their share of investigations, and I am quick to add not once has this company been found guilty of any wrong doing! Just because there have been investigations into a company does not necessarily mean that the company is a scam. The USA government along with many other governments around the world do all they can through their watch dogs like the FTC, to ensure that companies that are scams are closed down as quickly as possible. The fact that Nu Skin has been trading effectively for as long as it has and that it has been through investigations and is still trading speaks volumes, Nu Skin is not a scam.
According to Wikipedia, the Federal Trade Commission investigated the multi level marketing company in the 90’s over many complaints. It turns out that NuSkin settled in five states for deceptive advertising and over dramatizing the income of the NuSkin Sales Reps as an attempt to get more people to join the NuSkin MLM.
There was another payout of over A MILLION for deceptive practices again in 1994, and yet again in 1997 for over 1997.
You think that would be enough, but in 2014 (yes…very recent by comparison) the Chinese government announced an investigation into the NuSkin illegal pyramid scheme which was denied by the CEO M.. Truman Hunt.
With all the mess that NuSkin seems to be in, I would seriously hesitate any consideration to join NuSkin Enterprises/ NuSkin Pharmanex.
The fact that Nu Skin continues to expand and grow and by the sheer numbers of people that come into contact with or have dealings with the company or its distributors pretty much ensures that they are bound by the law of averages to have some adverse or negative feedback, after all human nature being what it is, if we are not happy we usually want to tell the world.
So does Nu Skin provide an opportunity for a sound long term financially rewarding business?
As we have already established Nu Skin is a Network Marketing business and as such is no walk in the park when it comes to being successful for most people. Many are sold on the dream of rapid wealth creation and leaps from rags to riches, I am sorry to be the one to tell you, but Network Marketing is not a get rich quick business, it takes time and effort to develop the skills and leadership needed to build a sound long term business.
To be successful you must become an effective marketer and trainer not a pushy sales person to succeed long term in this Industry. My years of experience in the Network Marketing Industry has shown me that the majority of people can only offer the very basics when it comes to marketing and training new distributors who join their teams and hence a lot of people fail and end up blaming the industry saying it doesn’t work. In fact the number one strategy offered by many in the Industry is make a list of family and friends and go talk to them.
First of all most people don’t feel comfortable contacting friends and family about joining them in a business and secondly that strategy is simply not enough to become a success in the Network Marketing Industry. You must attract people to you and the only way you can really do that is to offer and provide people with massive value and benefit.
If you want your Nu Skin business or any other Network Marketing business to be a long term success before you join any company I suggest you check out some marketing strategies that are all about today’s market place and will teach not only how to market but how to build valuable long term relationships.
I hope you have found this review helpful, hats off to you if you are looking to join the Network Marketing Industry just remember to balance your findings with your heart and your head and then get to work once you have made your decision.
Should I join NuSkin Enterprises to make money?
I’m going to go out on a very solid limb on this one and say NO.
There is too much confusion and way waaaay too much controversy with this company. There are so many other MLM companies out there with more solid reputations and compensation plans that are clear cut and easy to understand that there really is no reason to join the NuSkin business opportunity.
Throw in the massive amount of already established NuSkin representatives and distributors and I would have to questions your sanity if you do join NuSkin.
Even if they clean up their act, I would be hesitant until they change their (already changed several times) compensation plan.
Why bother with MLM and their messy and confusing sales reimbursements and comp plans?
Wouldn’t you like to earn money for yourself while working online at home and not have to worry whether or not the FDA was going to shut down your company like they did VEMMA? Or worry if they will go out of business like Kitsy Lane?
Earning a solid income online is possible but you’re going to need some millionaire mentors if you want to be successful.
As a matter of fact, here’s yours truly in a silly interview a few months after I joined….
